As you guys know, I decided to get back into web design. I used to design years ago for fun: mostly it was informatiove websites on celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Angelina Jolie, rock stars like Courtney Love….you get it.
I got started when I was in college – about 1998 or so – when they built us a new kick-ass library equipped with about 50 or more computers all linked up to the newness of the WWW. It wasn’t used a lot back then, but I am always up for trying new things….especially technology!
I also lived with my abusive ex at the time so anything to avoid going home was taken advantage of. So I stayed many hours after classes to use the computers. Somehow I found free website hosting through geocities. Do any of you remember when they had neighborhoods like Sunset Strip (which was for the music scene) and Pit was the area and then your address, like this: geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Pit/4014 – which was actually one of my addresses…the one for Courtney Love.
Well, that’s how I got started.
And I designed sites for years using simple HTML. I recently decided to get back into it because I think it is SO FUN!!! Call me crazy, but making a webpage for all to see is just so amazing! Putting a design into action from code is just one of the neatest things. I always like to approach things from every angle, but I love a challenge, so I usually come at it from the most difficult angle. Instead of using site builders, I like to write it all out myself. No copying and pasting, no stealing templates and changing them up, none of that. I sit down and write out every last word from my website starting from the world wide web consortium code at the top to the footer at the bottom.
I also like creating banners and other graphics, too.
Because I enjoy it so much, I decided to give it a go. The only thing is is they have created something new since the last time I wrote code and that’s CSS. When I first looked at this several months ago, it confused me. So I bought a book! Integrated HTML and CSS by Virginia DeBolt has been so helpful!! I thank her for teaching me what will help me become an awesome and successful designer.
With all of that, I have started a new business.
I have not launched a website yet as I am looking into purchasing hosting. I will keep you posted!
I am currently designing the website for Stella Zotis from the latest season of Project Runway! How exciting!
